Goose is an open-source (Apache 2.0 licensed), model-agnostic agent harness and desktop environment created by Block. This guide documents how Goose operates as an agent harness for Apache Magpie for #319. Grounding is established by RFC-AI-0004 Principle 3 (Vendor Neutrality), which guarantees that Magpie adopters can drive all framework workflows using fully open-source, non-proprietary agent harnesses.
Goose provides an open-source execution stack with:
- Model independence: Native connectivity to Anthropic Claude, OpenAI GPT, Google Gemini, OpenRouter, and local open-weight inference runners (Ollama, vLLM).
- First-class MCP support: Built-in client capabilities for stdio and streamable HTTP (
streamable_http) Model Context Protocol servers. - Extensibility: Built-in
developertool extension and a declarative recipe subsystem.

Invoke a Magpie skill
After running /magpie-setup to adopt the repository, the canonical .agents/skills/ links are active in your working tree.
Goose discovers these skills directly from the workspace.
Interactive terminal session
Start an interactive session within the adopted repository:

Inside the session, prompt Goose to execute any Magpie workflow:
Run the magpie-security-issue-triage skill to inspect recent vulnerability reports.
Goose reads the corresponding SKILL.md, checks prerequisites, and presents proposed diagnostic steps before mutating tracker state.
Headless or automated execution
For non-interactive triage passes, automated sweeps, or headless scripting:

Declarative recipe integration
Goose supports recipes — declarative YAML or Markdown workflows that define parameters, system instructions, and required extensions. Per PRINCIPLES.md §13, Magpie avoids duplicating its 70+ skills into per-harness formats. Instead, a Goose recipe wraps and invokes the underlying Magpie skill and tool bridges:

Tool bridges and developer extension
Magpie skills execute deterministic operations via language-agnostic scripts under tools/ (e.g. tools/cve-tool-vulnogram/, tools/github/, tools/privacy-llm/).
Goose provides the built-in developer extension, which equips the agent with shell execution and file manipulation tools.
When a skill requires running a tool command:
- Goose invokes the local CLI bridge through its
developer__bashtool. - Actions execute in the local project environment following standard subshell semantics.
Model Context Protocol (MCP) configuration
Goose features native Model Context Protocol support for stdio and streamable_http servers.
Configure framework MCP servers in ~/.config/goose/config.yaml or project-specific configuration:

Human-in-the-loop and permission controls
Magpie enforces strict Human-in-the-Loop principles: no destructive action occurs without explicit human approval.
[!IMPORTANT] Goose default mode: Out of the box, Goose runs in Autonomous Mode (
GOOSE_MODE: "auto"), which executes commands and modifies files without requesting confirmation.To align Goose with Magpie’s security posture, adopters must configure approval mode in
~/.config/goose/config.yaml:GOOSE_MODE: "approve"In an active session, verify or switch mode at any time using
/mode approve.
When operating under approve mode:
- Interactive confirmation: Goose prompts for human confirmation before executing shell commands or applying file modifications.
- Read-only diagnostic commands: Read operations (
git status,gh issue list,uv run pytest) can be safely approved. - Write-access discipline: Outbound communications, issue state changes (
gh issue close), and remote pushes (git push) must always remain gated on explicit human confirmation.
Repository instruction ingestion
Goose ingests repository instructions from .goosehints in the working directory (see upstream using-goosehints.md).
To ensure Goose follows Magpie repository rules without duplicating instructions, create a .goosehints file at the repository root linking AGENTS.md:

Clean-environment wrapper and isolation
To run Goose under Magpie’s standard credential isolation policy:

The agent-iso launcher scrubs ambient cloud tokens while preserving local developer tooling (git, uv, gh, goose).
[!WARNING] Layer 0 Isolation Caveat: As documented in
tools/agent-isolation/README.md, generic harness invocations (agent-iso <cli>) provide Layer 0 environment stripping only — no push gate. Goose receives the liveSSH_AUTH_SOCKwith nothing gating agit pushat the wrapper boundary. Gating remote pushes relies on operating inGOOSE_MODE: "approve"and operator diligence.
